An awesome accomplishment, this twice life-size Shona Warrior took a year to complete and represents the very best of Peter's output. Leaves of camouflage combine with Eagle feathers and the blade of his spear to compliment the power and intensity of the warrior's majestic head. Peter is certainly one of the finest sculptors living and working in Zimbabwe today and perhaps in all of Southern Africa.
The stone is an intriguing piece of variegated Verdite, a hard mica and chrome based mineral that only comes from a single quarry at Concession in the Mazowe District of Zimbabwe. This particular rock posed a significant challenge to Peter’s experience and abilities. As can be seen from the pink/gray areas of the neck, chest, and shoulder. It is corundum impregnating the verdite. Corundum can be as hard as a nine on the Mohr’s scale of hardness, heaping difficulty upon difficulty.
Around his neck is a container, sealed with a small feather . . . . perhaps ground-up marijuana or some other stimulant before the battle begins.
