Our immediate reaction to his elegant bird sculptures was the realization of just how much stone he had to remove to achieve the soaring composition . . without breaking anything. The marriage of composition and engineering that successfully combine to achieve a sense of soaring weightlessness is truly masterful.
The birds move in space echoing the work of Constantine Brancusi, Romanian sculptor (1876-1959), whose 'Bird in Space' caused a sensation in 1928, and about which Brian is totally unaware. This Brancusi-like subtraction to the arrangement - wings and beaks remain to suggest the freedom of flight.
