Amos Mavhunga lives and works at his rural home 150km south of Harare. He is a perfectionist . . . the curves, lines and surfaces were precise and exact to a level that few other artists achieve. . . even though his work is small and quite simple.
Amos usually works in Kwekwe Fruit Serpentine stone and is very fussy about the stone that he works with, preferring to use stone that shows the impregnation of copper. Although Amos would never have seen the sculpture of Constantin Brancusi or Jacques Lipchitz, his small works attempt to render his subjects to their simplest forms even further that they did. Overstatement? Perhaps!. But just look at how he can reduce the human face to its essence. Each work is a little gem.
