NDEBELE GIRL This work by Farai is truly a wonderful piece. Simple in its composition; but grand, proud and exuding an inner life and intensity, Ndebele Girl exemplifies his tremendous ability to transform hard stone into the softness of a beautiful young woman. The textures of the traditional hat are repeated in the necklace and armbands to create a visual vitality, breaking up the surfaces of her face and torso.
Butter Jade is a difficult stone to work with. Hard, brittle and full of impurities called unakite, a petrified vegetable material, Butter Jade challenges the fine artists that, courageously, choose to work in the stone from Manicaland on the Mozambican border.
