Farai is undeniably a Master of his craft. This work shows his total control of his medium, Butter Jade stone from Birchenough Bridge in Manicaland on the Zimbabwe boarder with Mozambique. The hard brittle stone is a challenge to work with, not only because of its hardness, but also because of the impregnations of dark unakite (petrifies vegetable material) in the stone.
He has positioned his composition subtly vertical with the striations so that they enhance the surface and not detract the brilliant play of textures on the hat, earrings, necklace and arm-bands give visual excitement that rhyme like a poem from top to bottom. And . . . that face. What a face. He has the magical ability to make stone come alive. Its uncanny.
